Is It Safe to Get a Tattoo in Vietnam? A 7-Point Hygiene Checklist

By BlueZii - Electric Tattoo

29/10/2026

Yes, getting a tattoo in Vietnam is safe if you choose a studio that uses new single-use needles, fresh ink and sterilized tools for every client, and shows you a clear price before it starts. The risk is not the country. It is the shop. This checklist shows you exactly what to look for, and how we do it at Electric Tattoo in Hanoi.

We have tattooed in Hanoi since 2011, for travelers from all over the world and for Vietnamese artists and celebrities. Planning a tattoo in Vietnam raises the same questions every week: is it clean, will I pay more as a foreigner, and can I still go to the beach? Here are straight answers.

Tattoo in Vietnam: the short answer

  • Hygiene: a good studio opens a new needle pack in front of you and uses fresh ink for your session only.
  • Price: you should get a quote before any needle touches skin. At Electric it is one formula for everyone: 1,800,000–2,200,000 VND (about $69–85) per hour.
  • Timing: plan the tattoo near the end of your trip. A fresh tattoo needs to heal before you swim.
  • Age: you must be 18 or older.

A 7-point hygiene checklist for any tattoo studio

Use this in any city, not only Hanoi. If a studio fails one of these, walk away and look for another place to get your tattoo in Vietnam.

  1. New needles, opened in front of you. Needle cartridges come sealed. Ask to see the pack opened.
  2. Fresh ink for your session only. Ink is poured out for you and thrown away after. Nothing goes back into the bottle.
  3. Fresh gloves. The artist puts on new gloves for you and changes them whenever they touch anything outside the work area.
  4. Covered surfaces. The machine, cables, bottles and the chair are wrapped in plastic barrier film that is replaced for every client.
  5. A clean, bright room. Look at the floor, the bins and the workstation. Tidy is a good sign.
  6. Clear aftercare. A serious studio explains aftercare out loud and gives it to you in writing.
  7. Honest answers. If you ask “how do you sterilize?” and get a vague answer, that is your answer.

How we keep every tattoo in Vietnam safe at Electric Tattoo

Every client gets new single-use needles that are never reused, fresh imported ink from known brands such as Dynamic, and tools sterilized in a medical-grade autoclave before each session. Gloves and barrier film are new for every client, and our artists are certified. That is also why we charge a flat minimum of 1,000,000 VND (about $38) for tattoos under 30 minutes: a small tattoo still uses a full new set of supplies.

Before we start, the artist explains each step, checks your blood pressure and cleans the skin. After the session we cover your tattoo with a second skin, a thin protective film that stays on for the first 72 hours. Larger pieces may get a plastic wrap for 30 minutes to an hour instead. You leave with the full aftercare steps, and you can message us at any time while it heals.

Every tattoo comes with a lifetime warranty once healed. If you come back to Vietnam, or simply drop by the studio, we check it and touch it up when the warranty applies.

How to choose a studio for your tattoo in Vietnam

Hygiene is the first filter for any tattoo in Vietnam. Then look at the work and the people:

  • Read recent reviews. Look at the last three months on Google, not only the star rating. Electric has 700+ five-star Google reviews, most of them from international clients.
  • Choose the artist, not just the shop. Look for healed work in the style you want. Wolf Nguyễn works in realistic, lettering, blackwork and cover-up. Horituan works in traditional and Japanese.
  • Ask for a custom design. At Electric every design is drawn for you, never copied.
  • Check you can talk easily. Our artists speak English with clients, and you can send your idea in writing first.

Will I be overcharged as a foreigner?

This is the second question we hear most about a tattoo in Vietnam. Overcharging tourists does happen in Hanoi, with taxis and street sellers in the news. That is why we publish our price and use the same formula for everyone, Vietnamese or foreign. Same price for everyone.

  • Standard artist: 1,800,000–2,200,000 VND (about $69–85) per hour.
  • Under 30 minutes: flat 1,000,000 VND (about $38).
  • Larger pieces: a package price after a free consultation, agreed before the first session.
  • Master and award-winning artists: 3,000,000 to 3,500,000 VND (about $115 to $135) per hour.

Full tables with real examples are on our tattoo price guide.

Is it safe to get a tattoo in Vietnam while traveling?

The tattoo itself is safe. With a tattoo in Vietnam, the risk is what you do in the weeks after. A fresh tattoo is an open wound while it heals, and Vietnam is hot, humid and full of beaches.

  • Book it near the end of your stay in Hanoi, not right before Ha Long Bay or the beach.
  • No swimming in the sea, pools or lakes until it is fully healed.
  • Keep it out of direct sun. Loose clothing works better than sunscreen on a fresh tattoo.
  • Skip alcohol for 7 days and avoid heavy workouts that make you sweat a lot for about a week.
  • Rinse with clean water only after the first 3 days. No bar soap or wet wipes. Pat dry with a clean paper towel.

Full steps are on our aftercare page.

Signs something is wrong

Some redness, swelling and soreness in the first few days is normal. Contact the studio, or a doctor, if you notice:

  • Swelling, redness or pain that gets worse after the first few days
  • Pus, yellow or green discharge, or an unusual smell
  • Fever or chills
  • Redness or heat spreading around the tattoo
